An Innovative Signal Timing Strategy for Implementing Contraflow Left-Turn Lanes at Signalized Intersections with Split Phasing

چکیده
Contraflow Left-Turn Lanes (CLLs) have the potential of being a solution for mitigating congestions at signalized intersections where split phasing is recommended or required. However, current signal timing strategy with CLLs cannot be directly applied (SIWSP). To address this problem, study proposed an innovative strategy, which referred to as Counterclockwise Split Phasing (CSP) timing, implementing SIWSPs. A traffic simulation-based case was conducted and results indicate that, by using CSP plan, can implemented SIWSP significantly reduce caused high left-turn demand type intersection. In addition, since design procedure has fully considered clearance time requirements vehicles on CLLs, risk associated use controlled makes it safe intersection

Developing an Analytical Model and Simulation of The Contraflow Left-Turn Lane at Signalized Intersections
At some intersections, excessive queue lengths may spill out of the left-turn bay and block the through lanes, jeopardizing level of service for the entire intersection. One of the most effective plans recently presented by the researchers is the "Contraflow left-turn lane" (CLL) In this method, left-turn vehicles will use the nearest lane in the opposite direction in addition to the usual left...
متن کاملSafety Effects of Protected Left-Turn Phasing at Signalized Intersections: An Empirical Analysis
Left-turn crashes occur frequently at signalized intersections and often lead to severe injuries. This problem can be addressed through the implementation of protected left-turn signals. This gives left-turning vehicles the right to enter the intersection free from conflict with opposing drivers and pedestrians. The present study analyses the effect of this measure on crash occurrence. The stud...
متن کاملOffsetting Opposing Left-Turn Lanes at Signalized Intersections: A Safety Assessment Case Study in Lincoln, Nebraska
Opposing left-turning vehicles at signalized intersections block each others’ view of oncoming traffic. The ability to see oncoming traffic is critical for safe negotiation of left-turns at intersections during a permitted left-turn phase of the signal. Offsetting of opposing left-turn lanes at signalized intersections improves sight distance for left-turning motorists. This paper reports on a ...
متن کاملIncreasing the Capacity of Signalized Intersections with Separate Left Turn
Separate turn phases are often used on the approach legs to intersections with heavy left turns. This wastes capacity on the approach because some of its lanes cannot discharge during its green phases. The paper shows that the problem can be eliminated by reorganizing traffic on all the lanes upstream of an intersection using a mid-block pre-signal. If drivers behave deterministically, the capa...
متن کاملDesign of Transit Signal Priority at Signalized Intersections with Queue Jumper Lanes
A queue jumper lane is a special bus preferential treatment that combines a short stretch of a special lane with a transit signal priority (TSP) to allow buses to bypass waiting queues of traffic and then to cut out in front of the queue by getting an early green signal. This paper first proposes a signal control design for queue jumper lanes with actuated TSP strategies and then compares its p...
